Overview

The DHS-Columba Protocol, a mobile application developed by Columbia University and tailored to use at the US Department of Homeland Security, is a scientifically derived instrument that assesses suicide risk severity. The app empowers the user to ask 2 – 6 questions about suicidal thoughts and behavior, calculates a risk level, and recommends next steps and resources.

Information Collected

The DHS-Columbia Protocol does not require individuals to register or provide any personally identifiable information. There is no sensitive personally identifiable information (SPII) collected by the DHS-Columbia Suicide Screening Tool. Data related to mobile device, operating system, and usage may be collected by the developer, but is not linked to your identity.

Uses of Information

Data collected on mobile device and operating system might be collected for usage information (product interaction) and diagnostics (e.g., crash data, performance, other functionality diagnostics). This information is not linked to your identity. No information is used for the purpose of advertising, marketing, or tracking.

Information Sharing

No information is shared with any entities, including federal, state, and local government, nor any private sector entities.

Application Security

The content contained within the mobile application is stored locally on the user’s device. No information is transmitted back to DHS. DHS does not collect PII or SPII from users of the DHS-Columbia Protocol. To further safeguard users of the DHS-Columbia Protocol, DHS performed security analysis of this mobile application prior to making it available to the public. In addition, Apple Inc. and Google perform independent security analyses of all applications made available via the respective public stores.

Analytics Tools

The app collects basic information on utilization (e.g., number of sessions, utilization by Component), performance, and crash data. This data is not linked to any individual identity.
